Men’s ‘On Trend’

by Lizzy Gardner
This spring, menswear is all about versatile tailoring, rolled hemlines and rich textures, and whether your style is bold or bashful, here’s your full guide to the season’s key trends.
With the double-breasted jacket remaining firmly on the catwalks for spring/summer, tailoring is this season’s biggest story. And with a multitude of silhouettes to choose from, there will be a style to suit all. For those of a slim build, look to Modish 60’s silhouettes with slim fit cigarette pants or suits as seen at Alexander McQueen. Alternatively, look out for styles in the season’s hottest hue - oatmeal.
For those hotter days (here’s hoping); tailored short suits will keep you ahead of the game on the style front. This season’s shorts are preppy in style, with rolled hemlines and teamed with soft tailed shirts or sports jackets and loafers (without socks).
Colour is also big this season with everything from nude to neon emerging from the catwalks. Shades of camel and ecru will keep you cool and sophisticated when the temperature rises and are perfect as an alternative to grey and blue for weddings.
White is another big colour story but should always be worn with caution: avoid top-to-toe white, opt for a pair of white chino shorts and a navy jacket for smart-casual or khaki carrot-fit chinos and a crisp white shirt for more relaxed weekends.
A palette of grey and slate is also on the cards this spring with the big players, the likes of Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana all getting involved. Keep this look fresh by sticking to lighter shades in luxurious fabrics.
Checks and tribal prints take centre stage this spring. Whether worn as a statement piece or a subtler accessory, look for rich shades of red or blue or opt for monochrome.
When it comes to accessorising, the male clutch is breaking its tabooed way onto the highstreet! If however, a man-bag this isn’t for you, update any suit with a dandy neckerchief and pocket square – a great way to introduce some colour to your look. Alternatively, look to Prada and Dolce & Gabbana’s lead and opt for traveller meets sailor style with a flat cap and scarf.
