Women’s ‘On Trend’

The transition from winter to spring is always one of the most anticipated, not only on the fashion front, but as we all look forward to sunnier climates and longer evenings.

With New Year’s resolutions a distant memory, we look to what’s fresh and new on the catwalks - and this spring’s trends will undoubtedly leave you in a frivolous mood!

If you’re looking for something to brighten the tone this spring, then the season’s sweet sorbet shades are just what the doctor ordered! If like me, pretty pale hues of lemon, mint, peach and icy blue leave you feeling like a child in a sweet shop, you will love what this season has to bring!

These pretty pastels were everywhere on the spring/summer catwalks with all the big fashion players getting involved.  From Preen to Phillip Lim, Fendi and Lanvin to name just a few, this is undoubtedly the biggest trend this season.  Opt for grown-up styles and simple tailoring to keep this look chic rather than child-like.

Continuing the trend for ‘pretty’, pearlescent has emerged as an underlying trend for spring. Subtler than the metallics of season’s past, the new ‘it’ fabric has a soft shimmer that adds a modern feel to glamour. Stick to this season’s pale palette or for a more dramatic look, take Marios Schwab’s lead and go for black.

Pure white offers a high-maintenance alternative to the sugary palette of Spring /Summer. Worn white on white, the look is precision minimalism with crisp tailoring and clean lines.

Laser cut and lace fabrics were a reoccurring theme on the Spring / Summer catwalks; from origami cut leather pencil skirts at Giles to lace at Preen and Sonia Rykeil, this look is ultra feminine and pretty. Look out for silk and lace summer dresses with large lace designs –  perfect for a summer party.

While there are an abundance of silhouettes to choose from this season, one of the more unfamiliar is that of the peplum (a short overskirt flared from the waist of a fitted jacket, blouse or dress). From evening wear to work wear, the peplum cuts a flattering silhouette which means it may have more than just five minutes of fame! Work the peplum trend with a pencil skirt or cropped cigarette pants for 1940’s inspired style.

Florals become more formal for spring, with a move away from the floaty and a move towards lady-like with below the knee skirts and tailored trousers. From the multi-coloured blossoms of Marni, Balmain and Erdem to monochrome at Moschino, Alexander Wang and Dries Van Noten - spring is in full bloom!

Accessories this season focus around the wrist with stacked bangles making a huge come back. Seen on the catwalks in all sizes and materials, the bangle is definitely this season’s must have! My tip: look out for ethnic inspired pieces to keep you on top of the fashion game this spring/summer. On the shoe front, mules are this season’s new revival; from pointed to open toe it’s time to get those heels looking perfect!
