maintaining  balance

HEAD UP! Your golfing pals cry when you duff another shot. No such thing say I.

It is not really possible to actually lift your head whilst making a stroke, what happens is you lose balance.

Now maintaining balance relys on having good posture and a firm foundation, so if you are wibbly wobbly over your shots re- learn this basic drill.

Take a five iron and hold it as you normally do when playing, now stand at full height with your feet set so that the outside of each shoulder is above the middle of the shoe below it. Hold the club out parallel with the ground so that the end of the grip is pointing one inch to the left of your belt buckle. Bend forwards from your hips until the sole of the five iron touches the ground, the back of your knees will feel tight so relax the pressure by flexing them.

Now you have the correct posture position, but here are some additional check points. From the ground upwards, (a) you should be able to wiggle your toes inside your shoes, but it will take some effort. (b) your knee caps should be directly above the end of your foot, but behind your toes. (c) the end of the grip should be opposite the inside of your left thigh and a hand’s width away from it 4 inches or 10cms.

Good posture gives the golfer good balance, good balance, aids good shots.
