Golf tips by Gary Alliss

PUTTING ON EARLY SPRING GREENS

Gary Alliss is the resident Golf Professional at Ladbrook Golf Club near Tanworth in Arden.

Each issue we catch up with him for his valued golf tips.

Now that we are into the spring the putting surfaces are getting smoother, but in most cases the greens are not yet running at summer speeds, this results in many golfers not judging the speed to strike the ball correctly to achieve the desired distance control.

This happens because golfers make a longer backswing but do not follow through correctly, they either stop the follow through too short, or, break their wrists as they strike the ball and the putter head accelerates too much. The result of these two actions are putts that finish too short or shots that roll too far passed the target.

What I want you to do is practice putts in the 15 feet to 30 feet range from the hole, then try to develop a very slightly shorter back swing than you would on a summer green. To help you, place a headcover behind the ball limiting how far back you can swing..........please don’t make it too short! Now make a longer follow through with a smoothly accelerating action. The most important aspect of the stroke is to ensure that you follow through with your leading wrist (left for right handers) remaining firm and not bending. Make the stroke at least 15% longer in the forward stroke compared to the back, you should see that your left arm, wrist and club have maintained their relationship as it was at set up and your left wrist has travelled just beyond your left hip.

Roll to hole!

Let us tune up your game for the new season and come see our exciting new ranges for 2012 with many special offers.

The eagerly awaited festival at Cheltenham Racecourse

by Emma-jane Brown

cheltenham

Let the Festival begin!

Emma-Jane Brown looks forward to the eagerly-anticipated Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse

It’s almost time for The Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse – a four-day spectacular that is among the finest Jump race events in the calendar.

More than a quarter of a million spectators go through the gates every year for this fabulous event, which means the estimated gate receipts will be about £7 million.

Prize money at this year’s Festival stands at almost £3.38 million – it is no wonder that the main five races are so eagerly anticipated – and with more than £600 million expected to be staked on the outcomes during the four days, you can see it is a hugely important event for bookmakers, too.

The Festival kicks off on March 13 with Champion Day. There are seven races altogether on this inaugural day, but riders vie for the most important hurdle race of the season, The Stan James Champion Hurdle. Champion Day also features a parade of past champions, entertainment, pre-racing interviews in the parade ring.

Wednesday is Ladies Day, which gives racegoers the chance to enjoy some wonderful sights on and off the racecourse as women dress to impress.  The real action is a seven race card, featuring the sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase.

It may be a couple of days early, but Thursday, March 15 will be the St Patrick’s Day races. A massive fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, the charity race will take centre stage on the Thursday to boost the £400,000 that has been raised for the charity over the past two years.

The day will also feature the Ladbrokes World Hurdle and the Ryanair Chase, which was won last year by Alberta’s Run, trained by Jonjo O’Neill.

The Festival culminates in the legendary Betfred Gold Cup – possibly the climax of the entire Jump racing season. Last year, amateur Midland jockey Sam Waley-Cohen romped home on Long Run, beating Denman, Kauto Star and Imperial Commander, who had won four Gold Cups between them.

This year’s race promises to be just as exciting.

It is a huge operation, just to keep the spectators fed and watered. It is estimated that racecourse caterers Catering at Cheltenham will serve 20,000 bottles of Champagne, 30,000 bottles of wine, 240,000 bottles of beer and lager, and 220,000 pints of Ireland’s national drink, Guinness, as well as 10,000 gallons of tea and coffee.

About 12,000 people will sit down to three or four-course lunches every day in the various restaurants and hospitality areas, while the rest will eat into  burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches that, if laid end to end, would stretch almost three miles. Racing might be the main attraction, but the legendary Festival Shopping village is also a vital part of the four-day event.

This year, there will be 80 stands selling everything from wellies to wine, silverware to Spanish property and books to binoculars. You could even treat yourself to a hand-made rocking horse!

I am so excited about this year’s Festival and I hope to see lots of Touchbase readers there. Come and say hello if you see me!

Olympic stadium tour with Lord Coe

by Emma-Jane Brown

olympics1

In the summer of 2012 we’ll welcome millions of people to London and the UK for an unforgettable experience.

The countdown to 2012 has begun

Emma-Jane Brown takes a look around the facilities that will take centre stage when the London 2012 Olympics open in July

As the clock struck midnight and welcomed in January 1, 2012, the London Olympics countdown began in earnest

You can’t help but notice that 2012 is Olympic year, the year when the UK will welcome millions of people to London for what is already being billed as a spectacular sporting and cultural event.

London 2012 is the most exciting sporting event to be staged in the UK for generations – some may argue for ever – but we Midlanders can look forward to playing our part in this historic event.

Every borough will have the chance to see the Olympic torch relay – it will be taken within ten miles of 95 per cent of people in the UK – and it is scheduled to arrive in Warwickshire, West Midlands and the Cotswolds on various dates in June and July.

The famous flame will set off from Land’s End, in Cornwall, on May 19, the day after it arrives from Greece, and will be carried by a total of 8,000 torchbearers through hundreds of towns and cities for 70 days. It will finally arrive at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, London, for the opening ceremony on July 27.

Birmingham is playing host to the USA and Jamaica athletics teams, who will train in the city prior to heading to London for the event. And the City of Coventry stadium, home to Coventry City FC, will also play its part by hosting 12 football matches, including the women’s bronze medal match.

As our elite athletes compete for a place in their squads, the finishing touches are being made to welcome sportsmen and women from across the globe.

olympics21

I was lucky enough to be invited to see the work that has taken place at the Olympic Park with two of giants from the Great Britain athletics world, Lord Sebastian Coe, and Dame Kelly Holmes.

Dame Kelly is one of the most respected female athletes this country has ever seen. A retired middle distance runner, she specialised in the 800 and 1500 metres, winning gold medals in each discipline in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Lord Coe, the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, is another huge inspiration for any aspiring athlete. The four-times gold medal Olympic winner, who also set eight outdoor and three indoor world records in middle distance track events, was bursting with energy as he showed me around the

Olympic Park.

It’s impossible not to be enthusiastic about the Olympics and when you walk around the Olympic Park, I felt an enormous sense of pride.

The London 2012 Olympics stadium, which will host the Athletics and Paralympics events including the opening and closing ceremonies, is a breath-taking venue.

It’s also very environmentally-friendly.

Completed in just under three years, it has used low carbon concrete, which is made from industrial waste, and compared with other stadia, is 75 per cent lighter in terms of steel use. The top ring of the stadium is made from surplus gas pipes and architects reduced the need for steel and concrete by designing the lower section of the stadium to sit within a bowl in the ground.

The stadium will have a capacity of 80,000 during the games, with 25,000 permanent seats in its permanent lower tier and a temporary lightweight steel and concrete upper tier that holds a further 55,000 spectators. This can be removed after the games.

Facilities for the athletes within the stadium include changing rooms, medical support facilities and an 80 metre warm-up track.

olympics31

To hear the story of the build was fascinating – I hadn’t realised, for instance, that before construction began on the site of the Aquatic Centre, archaeological investigations uncovered evidence of an Iron Age settlement, including an ancient burial site with four skeletons.

The Aquatic Centre, which will host swimming, paralympics swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, was one of my favourite buildings. I love the architecture; it features a spectacular wave-like roof that is 160 metres long and up to 80 metres wide, giving it a longer span than Heathrow Terminal 5.

The Olympic Park will form one of the biggest legacies once the games have finished as it will be the largest urban park in Europe for 150 years. It will be connected to the tidal Thames Estuary to the south and the Hertfordshire countryside to the north and will be planted with native species, such as oak, ash, willow, birch, blackthorn and hawthorn.

But before the legacy, we have the sporting spectacular to look forward to. The 2012 Olympic games will feature 26 sports, which breaks down into 39 disciplines, from archery to wrestling – and for the first time, women’s boxing.

There are only five months to go, but I, for one, am very excited by the promise of seeing elite performers of athletics, gymnastics, equestrian sports, swimming and martial arts in my own country.

As I said my goodbyes to Dame Kelly and Lord Coe, there were butterflies in my stomach as I realised the next time I would be visiting would be for the opening ceremony.

I can’t wait for Olympics to begin.

Winter golfing tips by Gary Alliss

brenden cole

Gary Alliss is the resident Golf Professional at Ladbrook park Golf Club near Tanworth in Arden.

Each issue we catch up with him for his valued golf tips.

IN WINTER USE YOUR HYBRID/RESCUE CLUB

Well here we are in the depths of winter, wet courses a bit muddy so lift, clean and place the golf ball is in operation.

Once you have replaced your ball, hopefully on a good lie, and you are some distance from the green I suggest you use a hybrid rather than a 5, 6 or maybe even 7 iron. If you believe a hybrid will go too far merely grip down the handle, the lower you grip the shorter the shot, but don’t forget as you go down the grip you will need to stand closer to the ball.

Now the idea of using a hybrid/rescue is to get more height hence greater carry and a soft landing shot.

I don’t want you to alter anything in your address or set up position, assuming you haven’t already gripped down the club of course, except to move the position of the ball a little more forwards towards your front foot, as a guide half a ball’s width, this is to promote a shallower sweeping attack on the ball, launching it a fraction higher initially and reducing just a touch of the back spin, so that the shot does not balloon up into the air on a breezy day.

Playing more second shots with your hybrids will increase your enjoyment of your winter golf.

Merry Christmas and Happy Golfing in 2012.

For all your Christmas gift needs visit us at LPGC, open 7 days per week, all golfers are most welcome, huge range of ladies and gents clothing and many special offers.

Olympia – The London International Horse Show

brenden cole

by Emma-jane Brown

Olympia - The London International Horse Show

13th- 19th December 2011

I’m sure you are all with me on this one. It’s quite amazing to see that December is here so quick. Where on earth has the year gone?

And of course December is my favourite month of the year when it comes to the Equestrian diary as Olympia was a very successful show for me for so many years, and still holds some great memories in the ring and outside too!

Olympia has always been a fantastic Equestrian party and is host to the UK”S only Show jumping and Dressage F.E.I. World Cup Qualifiers.

Celebrating 40 years of World-class equestrian sport and this year at Olympia it is introducing a brand new Extreme Driving competion to its coveted event format for 2011.

The new indoor carriage driving competion will see the worlds best four-in hand drivers battling it out for the title on the evening of Thursday 15th December 2011 and the afternoon of Friday 16th.

Renowned for immense speed and a huge part of precision, the driving competion will feature marathon style obstacles and pairs of cones that drivers navigate against the clock.

Pippa Bassett will also take part with her team of beautiful and so well trained and obedient white Lipizzaner horses which will amaze you as you watch the display beyond belief.

This year’s seven-day equestrian extravaganza starts off with the Reem Acra F.E.I. World Cup. Dressage qualifier on the evenings of Tuesday 13th December and Wednesday 14th December (Freestyle to Music).

Jumping classes start on Thursday 15th December The Rolex World Cup qualifier presented by H&M Sunday 18th December (afternoon) And the Olympia Grand Prix on the evening of Monday 19th December.

And of course not ever forgetting Olympia’s favourites The Kennel Club Dog Agility, The Shetland Pony Grand National and of course my favourite the Christmas Finale. Some of the displays include the flying Frenchman Lorenzo. Who not only looks incredible in the ring doing his amazing displays. But when you see him up close and personal his even better. He always has hundreds of people visit him when it is autograph time

And of course not forgetting Luistano Quadrille from Portugal. Which will be another great display and this is the first time that the high school display has been seen here at Olympia. You will not want to leave your seat, which is fore sure. As there is so much to see at all times. In my eyes and of course many more will agree with me. This is the World’s Best Equestrian Party.

And when you watch the Christmas Finale complete with Father Christmas on a sleigh, Carol Singers, and lots of White fluffy Snow you realise Christmas is not that far away. You can also stock up on Christmas gifts, and equestrian goodies, and with over 200 shops and stalls there is something for everyone, ranging from food, gifts, homeward, clothing, art, jewellery, and much more.

Tickets for Olympia are priced between £21, and £55 with discounts for groups, seniors and children. www.olympiahorseshow.com

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!

YES its in London, But to visit Olympia Horse Show is a dream come true.

Good Luck to all the Riders and Equestrian Displays a big thank you to all the sponsors and all the organisers who work so hard to make this a FANTASTIC EQUESTRIAN PARTY.

And for me to personally wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2012.

RDA chosen for The Telegraph Christmas Appeal

I’m delighted that Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has been chosen as one of three beneficiaries for The Telegraph Christmas Charity appeal.

The appeal was launched in November and will continue until the end of January 2012 and is expected to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for its chosen causes.

A delighted Ed Bracher, chief executive of the RDA, has pledged that all money raised will go towards helping increasing capacity at its 500 UK groups. The charity was chosen following a competitive bidding process and presentation to senior representatives from the newspaper. “My colleagues and I were extremely impressed by the scope and ambition of what RDA does, and we are quite sure that our readers will feel the same,” said Richard Preston, assistant editor, who runs the Telegraph appeal.

Ed said the appeal would give the organisation the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about the work it does.

“We currently provide opportunities for riding and carriage driving to about 30,000 people with disabilities, but demand for places is extremely high,” explained Ed.

“With the support of The Telegraph we can help to increase capacity at our current groups and also develop plans for new centres where they are needed most.”

Supercar marques at Rybrook Hockley Heath

Supercar marques at Rybrook Hockley Heath

by Jayne Howarth

These are used cars with a difference: Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Morgan, Bentley, to name a few.

Rybrook’s luxury flagship dealership in Hockley Heath boasts a superb range of prestige brands, many of which still enjoy the manufacturer’s warranties.

Located on the first floor of the £4 million showroom, which opened this summer, the specialist used car division is where customers can part-exchange for a wide range of new supercar marques, including McLaren and Rolls-Royce, or upgrade to another pristine used car.

The spacious showroom boasts only the highest quality and has room for just 22 high-end vehicles.

Keith Lacey, General Manager, at Rybrook Hockley Heath, said the unrivalled quality and superb after-care service means customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing their next vehicle.

“We will only select the very best cars for our specialist used car showroom, which is evident when you take a look around,” he says.

“We are very proud of the operation and feedback from customers so far shows that they too are impressed with the showroom and the quality of cars that are on offer. And because they are all under cover all of the time, they remain in untouched condition.”

Many of the vehicles on the first floor have low mileage and have had just one previous owner. All are in immaculate condition and look like new.

How about a stunning 2011 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano F1, with seven-speed automatic transmission and 6,000bhp for just £184,950? Or a 2010 Bentley Continental GT Speed (W12) for £96,949? Perhaps a 2010 Porsche Carrera S 3800cc?

Whatever you choose from the incredible range, you are guaranteed superb customer service from the sales specialists at Rybrook.

All vehicles undergo a rigorous 124-point pre-delivery check to ensure your new car is in top-notch condition when you take delivery of the keys for the first time.

About half the vehicles that are part-exchanged through Rybrook Hockley Heath’s specialist used showroom still enjoy the manufacturer’s warranty. But any that do not have that still have a Rybrook 12-month parts and labour warranty for additional peace of mind.

“Our customers expect nothing less than outstanding customer service and we at Rybrook have a long-standing reputation for our high levels of exceptional care,” explains Keith.

“This is not a place for high pressure selling: the atmosphere here is very relaxed and customers will find that the sales team are incredibly knowledgeable about the cars in the showroom.

“Our ethos is firmly focused on offering the customer the best service possible.”

On the ground floor you will find the new home for Rolls-Royce Birmingham and McLaren Birmingham.

Rybrook Holdings is one of only three McLaren retailers in the UK and joins an exclusive global network of 35 automotive retailers that will sell the revolutionary £168,000 MP4-12C and future McLaren Automotive models.

A dedicated after-sales team, based in nearby Cofton Hackett, ensures total service for all Rybrook customers.

One of the UK’s largest privately-owned retailer groups, Rybrook, which traces its roots in the prestige car market to the 1930s, offers customer service that is second-to-none.

Rybrook has more than 40 years’ experience working with BMW, with new and used models at its Warwick, Shrewsbury and Worcester showrooms. Further afield, the company represents Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo in the North-east of England and Mercedes in York and Harrogate. In Cardiff, Rybrook is the Bentley dealer.

With expert knowledge of the prestige and luxury car market, Rybrook ensures that every model in its showrooms is maintained to deliver peak performance at all times and remain in perfect condition on the road.

Golf tips with Gary Alliss

Golf tips with Gary Alliss

by Gary Alliss

Gary Alliss is the resident Golf Professional at Ladbrook Golf Club near Tanworth in Arden.

Each issue we catch up with him for his valued golf tips.

BALL POSITION

In the photograph you can see the ball positions I personally favour for full shots with 3 wood, 6 iron and pitching wedge, however I have to stress to you that there are no hard and fast rules about where the ball should be played for each club, but if you are unsure try the following

Go out into the practice field, find level ground but don’t’ put a ball down, simply make some full blooded practice swings ensuring the clubhead just grazes the grass. Try to make very similar swings   and hopefully the club will impact the grass in very near to the same position each time. Do this with a wedge, a mid iron and a fairway wood; eventually you can do it with every club. Now at the point where your tiny divots start with each club place the ball, this is the ball position for each of your clubs.

Ball position is intrinsically linked to roof width; if by chance you hit the same spot with every club (and some of you will) you will need to vary your stance width more than somebody who hits in different places. To explain, hitting the ball from a constant position requires a wide stance with the woods, but you are likely to strike the ball best off a considerably narrower stance with the lofted irons, up to a foot narrower. However, somebody who, like me, favours moving the ball nearer to mid stance as the shafts get shorter will only need to narrow their stance about 6” from driver to wedge. Getting this right will help you to achieve a correct angle of attack for the clubhead, assist the club to swing on the perfect path though impact and aid a centered strike on the ball.

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship 2011 by Rick Cressman - Nailcote Hall Hotel

Sunshine And Stars Brings Record Crowds To Nailcote Hall

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship

The sun shone and the crowds came in record numbers to enjoy the top golfers and celebrities competing in this year’s Farmfoods’ British Par 3 Championship.

The event was hosted again by Ryder Cup captain and double major champion, Tony Jacklin CBE who flew in from Florida with his great friend, Larry Laoretti, 1992 US Senior Open champion and the event’s first ever USA competitor.

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship

Armed with his trademark cigar, as well as his clubs, Larry charmed all the spectators with his sense of fun and style.  The first American amateur team to play also joined in all the fun for the four days play – the Brandenburg team led by Lee Brandenburg from California was ably assisted by Doug Breen and Frank Christian from Augusta who along with his father has photographed every Masters since it started in 1934 – a year after the first Par 3 Short Course Championship !

Past Ryder Cup and current Senior Tour player, Gordon J Brand won the Celebrity/Pro title on the first day while the very colourful Ian Halliwell’s team “The Social Golfer” assisted by Grand National winner, Bob Champion won the team event.

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship

The Black Tie Gala dinner which followed saw Tony Jacklin singing

after swinging!  And Laura White – X Factor finalist and the evergreen Barron Knights with Pete Langford entertained the 250 guests with a terrific Rock ‘n’ Roll show.

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship

After the first days warm up the serious business of the 36 hole PRO-AM started on Wednesday morning – at 7.20 a.m!  And right from the start the youngest competitor 10 year old Harry  Fearn made quite an impression, birdieing the first hole by chipping in from the bunker to the delight of his professional partner – 2006 Par 3 champion- Shaun P Webster.

Without a doubt the array of professionals joining the Championship was the best the event has ever seen with past Ryder Cup stars Maurice Bembridge, Tommy Horton, Malcolm Gregson and Gordon J Brand, being well supported by European Senior Tour players Carl Mason, Mark Mouland, Gary Wolstenholme, Tony Johnstone Andrew Sherborne and Dennis Durnian in their hunt for the title.

Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship

With a record £15,000 going to the winner and £5,000 to the over 60’s Super Senior winner, competition was sure to be fierce.  Younger stars from the European Tour who were chasing the big prize included Graeme Storm, Gary Boyd, Scott Jamieson, Paul Broadhurst, Danny Willett, Simon Wakefield, David Dixon and Seve Benson.

At the end of the first day’s play, the clubhouse lead was held jointly by No 1 European Tour Senior star, Carl Mason and current European Tour player, David Dixon at 3 under par – a very good score in the tricky breezy conditions.

Another bright day brought the crowds out in force to see the conclusion of the main championship.  Jasper Carrott who was playing with Paul Broadhurst and Peter Schmeichel who was paired with 2010 champion, Richard O’Hanlon were hoping their partners could make strong moves up the leaderboard but they both had to cope with finishing 14th.

But a couple of players were playing well and one in particular Andrew Sherborne was charging up the leaderboard.  Starting at 1 over par he reached 5 under par with two holes to play.  Then successive bogeys dropped him back to finish at 3 under par – but with the lead in the clubhouse.  Carl Mason and David Dixon had been slipping back during their rounds but Simon Wakefield and Seve Benson were pushing the new leader.  Simon birdied the 35th hole to get to 2 under par and needed a birdie at the last to force a play-off !

But, under pressure his tee shot failed to find the green and a bogey 4 saw him finish at 1 under par for 2nd place, behind the champion – Andrew Sherborne.  Seve Benson finished on level par for 3rd place – a very creditable effort on his first visit to Nailcote.

Seve enjoyed a consolation success in winning the Better Ball Pairs title and the Halliwell Cup with partner, Jason Preston.  The runners up were Shaun Webster and his 10 year old partner, Harry Fearn !

After all the excitement of the main event, it was back to another Celebrity/Am team day on the final day with more celebrity players joining in, including Bobby Davro, Anton du Beke, James Jordan, Ron Atkinson, Willie Thorne, Bill Roache and Alan McInally.

A great day finished with Bobby Davro’s Britvic team in the runners up place and just pipped by the Dowding & Mills’ team with celebrity Dougie Brown to the last title of the week.  Shaun P Webster won the individual celebrity prize.

All in all a great week helped by some lovely weather and the generosity of everyone involved raised £24,000 for  the Rainbow’s Hospice.  Now the plans start for next year when the Farmfoods’ British Par 3 Championship will return to Nailcote Hall from the 7th – 10th August.  Tony Jacklin confirmed he will be  back again and reminded everyone at the final dinner that the “short game” is the part of golf that really matters !
